Voluntary collection

Retailers who voluntarily agree to collect used mattresses when a new mattress is purchased can receive a financial incentive from Valumat. For practical reasons, the level of this compensation is calculated on the basis of weight, at a rate of 600 euros per tonne, i.e. approximately 9 euros per mattress.

In addition to this compensation, the retailer may also charge for transport costs when delivering the new mattress to the customer.

Are you eligible for compensation?

The list below will help you to determine whether, as a retailer, you are eligible for compensation for the voluntary collection of used mattresses. To be eligible, you must meet all the following conditions:

  • You are a professional vendor of mattresses.
  • You voluntarily collect your customers’ used mattresses free of charge when they buy a new mattress.
  • You use a Valumat collector or an approved second-hand shop to collect used mattresses.
  • Collected mattresses fall within the scope of the collection obligation.
  • You store the mattresses in a dry place, avoiding any risk of contamination.
  • You agree on the terms and costs of collection with your Valumat collector or recycling centre.

Amount of compensation

Retailers are not obliged to collect a used mattress when a customer buys a new one. However, they must inform their customers of existing collection solutions. Accepting a used mattress can obviously constitute an advantageous commercial service. To encourage this initiative, Valumat offers compensation to retailers who voluntarily collect used mattresses. The level of this compensation is calculated on the basis of the weight of the mattresses collected and amounts to 600 euros per tonne, or approximately 9 euros per mattress. Valumat adjusts this flat rate each year in line with changes in market conditions for the collection, transport and disposal of used mattresses.

Register as a collection point

If you agree to collect your customers’ used mattresses free of charge and voluntarily, you can register as a collection point. However, you must ensure that the mattresses are stored correctly: in a dry place and protected from contamination. In addition, it is mandatory to use a Valumat collector or a second-hand shop to collect them.
