The selective collection of used mattresses is a legal obligation. It is important that you follow a few ground rules in this respect. Store used mattresses in a dry place and protect them from contamination.

There are two places where you can dispose of your used mattress. At a second-hand shop, if the mattress is still in good condition and can be reused. The shop will assess its condition before deciding whether it can be reused.

If reuse is not possible, contact a Valumat collector. This will ensure optimal recycling of your mattress.

As a retailer, you can receive compensation for the voluntary collection of used mattresses, but only if you use a Valumat collector or an approved second-hand shop. Find an approved second-hand shop or a Valumat collector

Reusable or not?

Determining whether a mattress can be reused is not an exact science. To help you assess its condition, we have developed a decision tree. If the tree indicates that the mattress cannot be reused, it is considered waste and must be treated in accordance with the legislation in force on the transport, storage and export of waste.

Voluntary collection

Retailers who voluntarily agree to collect used mattresses when a new mattress is purchased can receive a financial incentive from Valumat. For practical reasons, the level of this compensation is calculated on the basis of weight, at a rate of 600 euros per tonne, i.e. approximately 9 euros per mattress.

In addition to this compensation, the retailer may also charge for transport costs when delivering the new mattress to the customer.
