I am a retailer. Am I obliged to collect used mattresses?

You are not legally obliged to collect your customers’ used mattresses. However, you must inform them of existing collection solutions. If you collect a used mattress when delivering a new one, you can charge for transport.

Using a Valumat collector or an approved second-hand shop

Before storing a used mattress, ask yourself: can the mattress be reused?

If the mattress is in an acceptable condition, ask a second-hand shop if they will accept it.

If it is too worn, contact a Valumat collector to ensure optimal recycling. As a retailer, you can get compensation. Find out the conditions for obtaining this compensation in this video.

Compensation for voluntary collection

Retailers who voluntarily agree to collect used mattresses when a new mattress is purchased can receive a financial incentive from Valumat. For practical reasons, the level of this compensation is calculated on the basis of weight, at a rate of 600 euros per tonne, i.e. approximately 9 euros per mattress.

In addition to this compensation, the retailer may also charge for transport costs when delivering the new mattress to the customer.

Do you also import mattresses?

If you not only sell mattresses but also import them directly in order to market them in Belgium, you are considered a producer/importer under the legislation. In this case, you must comply with the obligations associated with extended producer responsibility.
