What is extended producer responsibility?

Extended producer responsibility, or REP, requires mattress producers and importers to arrange the collection and disposal of used mattresses. This means, among other things, that they must compensate recycling centres for the storage, transport and disposal of used mattresses. This compensation is calculated in proportion to their market share. The authorities set collection and disposal rates, which are mandatory targets to be met.

At the same time, producers and importers should also implement preventive measures and organise awareness campaigns to encourage consumers to dispose of their used mattresses correctly.

The Flemish Region
